What's involved

What this repair actually is.

The return line is a low-pressure rubber hose that routes cooled fluid from the rack back to the reservoir. Rubber hardens and cracks with age, and the spring clamps lose tension, causing slow seeps that coat the underside of the car. We replace the hose and clamps and top off the system.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Slow, persistent drip under the car
  • Oily film coating parts under the engine
  • Cracked or spongy rubber hose visible
  • Fluid level drops slowly over weeks
  • Faint burning smell after highway driving
If you delay

Even a slow leak eventually runs the system dry, which ruins the pump and makes the steering suddenly heavy.
