What's involved
What this repair actually is.
Power steering leaks can come from the pump, either hose, the rack seals, or the reservoir, and fluid runs along parts before it drips, so the wet spot rarely marks the source. We clean the system, inspect under pressure, and use dye if needed to positively identify the leaking component.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Red or brown fluid spots under the front of the car
- You have to keep topping off the power steering fluid
- Whining or groaning when turning
- Steering gets stiff after the fluid runs low
- Burning smell from fluid dripping on hot parts
If you delay
Running the system low on fluid destroys the pump and can leave you with sudden heavy steering.
