What this repair actually is.
The rack and pinion converts your steering wheel input into left-right wheel movement. When its internal seals leak, its bushings wear, or the gear teeth develop slop, replacement of the whole unit is the correct fix. We install the replacement rack, connect and bleed the system (or calibrate the electric unit), and finish with a full alignment.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Fluid leaking from the rubber boots at the rack ends
- Clunk or knock felt in the wheel over bumps
- Steering binds or catches at certain points
- Deep play that tie rods didn't fix
- Grinding or notchy feel when turning
If you delay
A leaking rack eventually loses assist entirely, and internal wear can cause the steering to bind mid-turn.
