What's involved
What this repair actually is.
Modern electric power steering (EPS) uses a motor and control module instead of fluid, and faults set trouble codes rather than leaks. We scan the EPS module, test sensor data and motor commands live, and check wiring and system voltage to identify whether the motor, module, torque sensor, or wiring is at fault.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Steering assist warning light (often an orange steering wheel icon)
- Steering suddenly became very heavy
- Assist cuts in and out intermittently
- Steering feels different after a jump start or dead battery
- Assist works in one direction more than the other
If you delay
An intermittent EPS fault can drop assist without warning while driving, which is dangerous in a quick maneuver.
