What's involved

What this repair actually is.

In electric power steering, an electric motor on the column or rack provides the assist your muscles would otherwise supply. When the motor's windings or internal sensors fail, assist becomes intermittent or disappears. We replace the motor assembly, then program and calibrate the system so assist and safety features work correctly.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Steering suddenly very heavy
  • Assist cuts in and out
  • EPS warning light stays on
  • Grinding or clicking from the column or rack when turning
  • Assist stronger in one direction
If you delay

When the assist motor dies completely the steering becomes extremely heavy — dangerous in an emergency maneuver.
