What this repair actually is.
The belt-driven pump pressurizes the fluid that makes hydraulic steering effortless. When it wears it whines, leaks from the shaft seal, or loses pressure and makes the steering heavy. We replace the pump, transfer the pulley where required, install fresh fluid, and bleed the system of air.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Whining or groaning that changes with engine speed
- Steering heavy at idle or parking speeds
- Fluid leak at the front of the engine
- Squealing belt when turning
- Steering assist fades when hot
If you delay
A failing pump can seize and shred the drive belt, leaving you stranded with no power steering and often no charging system.
