What's involved

What this repair actually is.

On parallelogram steering systems, the idler arm mirrors the pitman arm on the passenger side, supporting the center link. It's usually the first linkage part to wear, letting the whole linkage flex up and down and creating wander and shimmy. We replace the arm and align the front end.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Wander and vague steering on a truck or van
  • Shimmy in the wheel over rough pavement
  • Passenger-side linkage moves when rocking the wheel
  • Failed inspection for idler arm play
  • Uneven front tire wear
If you delay

A sloppy idler arm lets toe change constantly while driving, wearing tires fast and worsening wander.
