What's involved

What this repair actually is.

The pitman arm bolts to the steering gearbox output shaft and swings the steering linkage left and right. Its ball joint wears with mileage, adding play you feel as wander and vague steering. We press the old arm off the splined shaft with proper pullers, install the new arm, and align the front end.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Steering wander on trucks or older vehicles
  • Play in the wheel before the tires respond
  • Clunk under the vehicle when turning
  • Loose joint found at inspection
  • Uneven front tire wear
If you delay

A separated pitman arm joint means total loss of steering — worn ones should not wait.
