What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The transfer case splits engine power between the front and rear axles on 4WD and AWD vehicles. When its chain, gears, or shift mechanism fail, the vehicle may grind, bind, or lose four-wheel drive entirely. We remove the failed unit, install a quality used, remanufactured, or new transfer case, fill it with the specified fluid, and verify 4WD engagement.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Grinding or growling from under the middle of the vehicle
- 4WD will not engage or disengage
- Binding or hopping in tight turns
- 4WD warning light or service message
- Fluid leaking from the middle of the drivetrain
If you delay
A failing transfer case can seize and lock the drivetrain, which can leave the vehicle stranded or cause a loss of control while driving.
