What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The differential is a gearbox that splits engine power between the wheels, and its gear oil breaks down with heat, towing, and miles. We drain the old fluid, inspect it for metal debris that signals internal wear, and refill with the manufacturer-specified gear oil, adding friction modifier for limited-slip differentials where required.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Whining or howling from the axle area
- It has been 30,000+ miles since the last service
- You tow or carry heavy loads regularly
- Fluid leak spotted under the differential
- Chatter from the rear when cornering
If you delay
Worn-out gear oil lets the gears and bearings wear rapidly, and a skipped fluid service can eventually become a differential rebuild.
