What this repair actually is.
The timing chain does the same job as a timing belt but is built to last the engine's life — unless oil neglect or design flaws wear it early. A stretched chain rattles, throws timing codes, and can eventually jump position. This is deep-engine work: we replace the chain, guides, tensioners, and usually the sprockets as a set.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Rattle from the front of the engine, worst at cold start
- Check engine light with timing correlation codes
- Rough running or hard starts
- Metal glitter in the engine oil
- Whirring or grinding from the timing cover area
If you delay
A chain that jumps or breaks lets pistons hit valves — the repair jumps from expensive to a full engine replacement.
