What this repair actually is.
The timing belt links the crankshaft to the camshafts so the valves open at exactly the right moment. Unlike the serpentine belt, it hides behind covers and gives little warning before failing. We replace the belt on its mileage interval, along with the tensioner and idlers, and strongly recommend doing the water pump at the same time since it's already exposed.
Symptoms

- Past the replacement interval in your owner's manual (often 60k–105k miles)
- Ticking noise from behind the engine covers
- Engine cranks but won't start after a snap
- Unknown service history on a used car
- Oil or coolant contamination on the belt
If you delay
On most engines a snapped timing belt lets pistons strike open valves — instant, catastrophic engine damage costing thousands.
