What this repair actually is.
The water pump pushes coolant through the engine and radiator. When its bearing or seal fails, it leaks from a weep hole, whines or grinds, and eventually stops moving coolant — which means rapid overheating. We replace the pump and gasket, refill and bleed the system, and verify the drive belt and pulleys are in good shape.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Coolant dripping from the front-center of the engine
- Whining, grinding, or squeaking from the front of the engine
- Overheating that gets worse at idle
- Steam from under the hood
- Play or wobble in the water pump pulley
If you delay
A seized water pump stops coolant circulation entirely and can snap the drive belt, causing sudden overheating and possible engine damage.

Replace with timing belt for serpentine-driven pumps.
