What this repair actually is.
The thermostat is a valve that controls when coolant flows through the radiator. When it sticks closed the engine overheats; when it sticks open the engine runs cold, wastes fuel, and the heater stays lukewarm. We replace the thermostat (and housing where required), refill the coolant, and bleed the system.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Engine overheats shortly after starting
- Temperature gauge never reaches normal
- Heater blows lukewarm air
- Check engine light with a thermostat code
- Temperature gauge swings up and down
If you delay
A thermostat stuck closed can overheat the engine within minutes of driving, risking head gasket and engine damage.
