What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The serpentine belt is one long rubber belt that spins your alternator, AC compressor, and often the water pump and power steering pump. We replace it before it cracks or snaps, and check the tensioner and pulleys it rides on while we're in there.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Squealing noise, especially on cold starts or in rain
- Visible cracks or fraying on the belt
- Battery or charging warning light
- AC or power steering suddenly weak
- Chirping that changes with engine speed
If you delay
If the belt snaps, you lose charging, cooling, and power steering at once — usually ending in a tow and possible overheating damage.
Maintenance tip
Inspect every oil change after 60k miles.
