What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The intermediate shaft links the steering column to the rack through two universal joints and often a sliding spline. When the joints dry out or wear, you feel clunks, a notchy catch when turning, or hear a knock over bumps. We replace the shaft assembly and center the steering.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Clunk felt in the wheel over bumps
- Notchy or sticky spots when turning slowly
- Knocking sound when turning at parking speeds
- Slight play between wheel movement and response
- Squeak or rubbing from behind the dash when turning
If you delay
A badly worn joint keeps loosening until steering response becomes vague and unpredictable.
