What this repair actually is.
The vent valve sits near the charcoal canister at the tank and closes so the EVAP system can seal itself for leak self-tests — when it sticks or its wiring corrodes, you get large-leak codes even with no actual leak. We replace the valve, and because it lives under the car it often needs rust-seized hardware worked loose.
Symptoms

- Large leak (P0455) or vent circuit code
- Check engine light that returns after a new gas cap
- Whooshing sound when opening the gas cap
- Failed inspection for an EVAP monitor

The EVAP code stays active and the system cannot self-test, keeping you unable to pass NY inspection.
