What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The purge valve meters stored fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the engine to be burned, and when it sticks open or closed it sets EVAP codes and can cause hard starts after fueling. It is usually a quick, inexpensive engine-bay replacement, and we verify the fix by confirming the EVAP system seals afterward.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Check engine light with a purge or EVAP code
- Hard start right after filling the tank
- Rough idle just after startup
- Failed inspection for an EVAP monitor
If you delay
A stuck purge valve keeps the EVAP code active, which alone fails NY inspection.
