What this repair actually is.
Shift solenoids are small electro-hydraulic valves that the transmission computer uses to command gear changes. When one sticks or fails electrically, you get harsh shifts, missing gears, or a transmission stuck in 'limp mode.' Depending on the vehicle, solenoids are reached through the transmission pan or sit in an external pack; we replace the faulty solenoid (or pack), refresh the fluid, and clear the codes.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Check engine light with a solenoid or gear-ratio code
- Stuck in one gear (limp mode)
- Harsh or delayed shifting between specific gears
- Transmission won't downshift or upshift normally
If you delay
Driving in limp mode or with harsh shifts overheats the fluid and hammers the clutches, turning an electrical fix into a mechanical one.
