What this repair actually is.
The hub assembly is the bolt-on unit the wheel mounts to; on most modern vehicles it contains the bearing and the ABS wheel-speed sensor in one sealed piece. When it wears, you get a hum or growl that changes with speed and sometimes an ABS light. We unbolt the old assembly from the knuckle, disconnect the axle and sensor, and install a new unit torqued to spec.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Humming or growling that changes with speed
- Noise that changes when you swerve gently left or right
- ABS or traction control warning light
- Play or wobble in the wheel when raised
- Uneven tire wear on one corner
If you delay
A failing hub bearing gets louder and looser until the wheel can wobble dangerously, and it can also ruin the CV axle it supports.
