What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The wheel bearing lets each wheel spin freely under the vehicle's full weight, and when it wears out it hums, growls, and eventually develops dangerous play. We remove the wheel, brake, and hub, install a new bearing or complete hub assembly, and torque everything to factory spec. On many vehicles the ABS sensor is built into the hub, so a failing bearing can also trigger the ABS light.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Growling or humming that rises with speed
- Noise changes when turning left or right
- Wobble or play you can feel in the steering
- ABS or traction-control light on with a droning noise
- Uneven tire wear on one corner
If you delay
A badly worn bearing can overheat and seize, which can lock the wheel while driving — it should not be ignored once it's loud.
Maintenance tip
Inspect with brake jobs.
