What's involved
What this repair actually is.
Each wheel-and-tire assembly is spun on an electronic balancer that finds heavy spots, and the technician adds precise counterweights to eliminate them. Even a fraction of an ounce out of balance causes a noticeable shake at highway speed and wears tires and suspension parts early.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Steering wheel shakes between 55–75 mph
- Seat or floor vibration at highway speed
- Cupped or scalloped wear spots on the tread
- Vibration that appeared after hitting a pothole
- A wheel weight visibly fell off
If you delay
An out-of-balance wheel hammers the tire, wheel bearings, and suspension with every rotation, wearing all of them out early.
