What this repair actually is.
The control arm locates your front wheel and carries both the ball joint and the pivot bushings. When the bushings tear or the joint wears, the wheel shifts under braking and bumps, causing clunks, wander, and uneven tire wear. On most modern vehicles the whole arm is replaced as an assembly, which renews the ball joint and bushings in one job, followed by an alignment.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Clunk from the front end over bumps or when braking
- Steering wanders or needs constant correction
- Vibration in the steering wheel at highway speed
- Uneven or feathered tire wear
- Vehicle pulls to one side under braking
If you delay
Torn control arm bushings let the wheel move where it should not — braking distances grow, tires wear fast, and the ball joint takes extra abuse.
