What this repair actually is.
When a windshield is replaced, the camera mounted behind it ends up looking through new glass at a slightly different angle, so the car's safety systems no longer know exactly where 'straight ahead' is. We recalibrate the camera using manufacturer targets in the shop (static) and, on vehicles that require it, a structured road drive (dynamic), then verify every camera-based feature works.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Windshield was just replaced
- Lane assist or collision warning light on since the glass work
- 'Camera calibration required' message on the dash
- Lane keep assist pulling or drifting since the new windshield
- Glass shop said calibration was needed but couldn't do it
If you delay
Until it's calibrated, lane assist and automatic braking can aim at the wrong spot on the road — reacting late, or reacting to things that aren't there.
