What this repair actually is.
Wheel studs are the threaded posts your lug nuts tighten onto, and they snap or strip from over-torquing, cross-threading, or rust. We remove the wheel and usually the brake components, press or drive out the damaged stud, install a new one with a matching lug nut, and torque everything to spec. On some vehicles the hub must come off to gain clearance, which adds labor.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- A lug nut spins freely and never tightens
- A stud snapped off during a tire change
- Lug nut is seized or the threads are visibly stripped
- Shop refused to remount a wheel due to a bad stud
- Wobble or clicking after a recent tire change
If you delay
Each missing stud overloads the ones next to it — losing a second one can let the wheel work loose while driving.
