What this repair actually is.
The valve stem is the small rubber or metal port you use to fill the tire, and it dries out, cracks, and leaks with age. We dismount the tire bead, install a new stem (or a new TPMS-compatible stem on sensor-equipped wheels), reseat and rebalance the tire, and verify the leak is gone with a soap test.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Tire slowly loses air but no nail is found
- Cracked or brittle rubber at the base of the stem
- Hissing or bubbling around the valve when sprayed with soapy water
- Air leaks out when you press the cap on
- Stem was damaged by a curb or car wash
If you delay
A leaking stem keeps deflating the tire, which wears the tread edges fast and risks a blowout if the tire runs badly underinflated.
