What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The turbocharger uses exhaust flow to force extra air into the engine for more power. Its shaft spins at extreme speed on a film of engine oil, so oil starvation or contamination destroys it. We replace the turbo, inspect and replace oil feed and return lines, check the intercooler system for debris, and change the oil — skipping those steps kills the new turbo fast.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Loud whining or siren noise under acceleration
- Blue or gray smoke from the exhaust
- Major loss of power or limp mode
- Burning oil quickly
- Check engine light with underboost or overboost codes
If you delay
A failing turbo can shed metal into the engine's intake or dump oil into the exhaust — either can destroy the engine itself.
