What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The transfer case sends engine power to both the front and rear axles on AWD and 4WD vehicles, and it has its own dedicated fluid. We drain the old fluid, inspect it for metal or moisture, and refill with the exact fluid your transfer case requires. It's cheap insurance for one of the most expensive drivetrain components to replace.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- AWD/4WD vehicle past 30,000–60,000 miles with no transfer case service
- Shudder or binding feeling in tight, slow turns
- Whining or humming from under the middle of the vehicle
- 4WD engages roughly or noisily
If you delay
Worn transfer case fluid leads to chain and bearing wear, and a failed transfer case can cost thousands to replace.
