What's involved

What this repair actually is.

The resonator is a secondary silencer in the middle of the exhaust that tunes out specific droning frequencies the muffler alone cannot catch. When it rusts through, the car develops a raspy tone or a highway drone; we replace it with a direct-fit or welded-in unit and new hardware.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Droning sound at highway speed
  • Raspy exhaust tone that was not there before
  • Visible rust holes on the mid-pipe canister
  • Louder exhaust but muffler looks fine
If you delay

A leaking resonator gets louder over time and the leak can spread into the surrounding pipe.
