What's involved

What this repair actually is.

Direct-injection engines use a second, engine-driven pump that raises fuel to extremely high pressure for the injectors; when it wears, you get long cranking, stumbling under load, and low fuel-rail-pressure codes. We replace the high-pressure pump (and its cam follower where applicable), then verify rail pressure meets specification under load.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Long cranking before start, especially cold
  • Stumble or hesitation under hard acceleration
  • Check engine light with low fuel-rail-pressure codes
  • Ticking from the pump area that's gotten louder
  • Reduced power at highway speed
If you delay

A failing high-pressure pump can leave you with a no-start, and on some engines a worn cam follower will damage the camshaft — a far bigger repair.
