What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The fuel pressure regulator holds fuel pressure at exactly what the injectors need; when it fails, the engine runs too rich or too lean and can flood, smoke, or start hard. We replace the regulator, then verify fuel pressure is stable at idle and under load.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Black smoke from the exhaust
- Strong fuel smell, especially after shutting off
- Hard starting when the engine is warm
- Poor fuel economy
- Rough idle that improves as you rev
If you delay
Running rich washes oil off the cylinder walls and can ruin the catalytic converter — a repair many times the cost of a regulator.
