What this repair actually is.
Many vehicles with rear disc brakes hide a small drum-style parking brake inside the rear rotor 'hat'. When those shoes wear out or their hardware rusts apart, the parking brake stops holding. We remove the rear rotors, replace the shoes and hardware, adjust them properly, and verify the car holds on a grade.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Parking brake won't hold the car on a hill
- Parking brake lever or pedal travels much farther than it used to
- Grinding from the rear when the parking brake is applied
- Rattling from inside the rear rotors
- Failed inspection for a weak parking brake
If you delay
A parking brake that won't hold is an inspection failure and a rollaway risk, especially with an automatic parked on a Bronx hill.
