What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The ignition switch is the electrical contact behind the key (or start button) that powers up the vehicle and triggers the starter. We replace the failed switch — and the lock cylinder if it's worn — then verify every key position and, where required, re-sync the anti-theft system.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Key is hard to turn or gets stuck in the ignition
- Have to jiggle the key to start the car
- Vehicle shuts off while driving, especially over bumps
- Accessories cut in and out with the key in Run
- No response at all in the Start position despite a good battery
If you delay
A failing switch can cut the engine off mid-drive — losing power steering and brake assist — or leave you unable to start the car at all.
