What's involved

What this repair actually is.

The flex pipe is a braided, bellows-style section that absorbs engine movement, and when its inner liner tears you get a raspy leak that gets worse with every rev. Where the surrounding pipe is healthy, we cut out the torn flex section and weld in a new universal flex unit — far cheaper than replacing the entire factory downpipe it is built into.

Symptoms

How you can tell.

  • Raspy, loud exhaust that worsens when revving
  • Visible broken braid on the flex section
  • Exhaust smell near the front of the car
  • Ticking that changes when the engine rocks
If you delay

A torn flex pipe leaks more as the braid unravels and can throw oxygen sensor codes from the escaping exhaust.
