What this repair actually is.
The lock actuator is the electric motor inside each door that responds to your key fob and lock switch. When it fails, one door stops locking with the rest, clicks or grinds without moving, or locks itself randomly. We remove the door panel, replace the actuator (often part of the latch assembly on modern cars), and verify locking from the fob, the switch, and the key.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- One door will not lock or unlock with the fob
- Clicking or grinding from inside the door when locking
- Door locks and unlocks itself randomly
- Lock works from the switch but not the fob, or vice versa
- Alarm triggers for no reason
If you delay
An unlockable door is a security risk in the city, and a randomly cycling actuator can drain the battery and set off the alarm at night.
