What's involved
What this repair actually is.
The failing clear coat is sanded back to a stable edge, the exposed base color is prepped (and re-shot where the sun has already dulled it), and fresh clear coat is sprayed and blended into the surrounding finish. Clear coat is the paint's UV shield — repairing it early saves the color coat underneath.
Symptoms
How you can tell.
- Paint looks cloudy or milky in patches
- Clear film visibly peeling or flaking off
- Dull, chalky patches on the hood, roof, or trunk
- White or hazy edges spreading from one spot
- Paint that won't shine no matter how much you wax it
If you delay
Peeling clear coat spreads fast and lets UV burn the color coat underneath, and once the base color fades the fix becomes a full respray of the panel instead of a clear coat repair.
